Top Rock Tunes Mix 2012

Happy New Year! This is the time to think about the people you’re most grateful for. But rather than do that, I’m going to tell you about my favorite rock songs of the year!

I don’t do top 10 lists* so instead I’m going to give you my 2012 mix. What’s the difference, you say? Well, they are ordered by flow rather than rank — the idea being this actually works as a mix!

But enough talk! Click the links to hear the tunes yourself, then let me know what you think in the comments below.

  1. Deep Sea Arcade – Girls
From the first sha-la-la, this throwback to the ’60s/’70s simply rocks.
  2. Divine Fits – Would That Not Be Nice
The guys from Spoon and Wolf Parade create a groove that sticks in your head all day.
  3. Walk the Moon – Shiver Shiver
Hit the dance floor and don’t feel embarrassed singing along: “Shall we get intimate, again?”
  4. Django Django – Default
This song is catchier than is possible to describe. Just click the link above and see.
  5. Tame Impala – Feels Like We Only Go Backwards
A bass-heavy, retro jam from possibly Australia’s best young band. Get their whole LP, “Lonerism,” while you’re at it.
  6. Bleeding Knees Club – Lipstick
Add a lot of sarcasm and sneering to ’60s beach tunes and you pretty much get this band. If you like Wavves, you’ll like Bleeding Knees Club.
  7. Green Day – X-Kid
Green Day’s trilogy of albums this year was mixed to say the best, but this one is gold.
  8. Bloc Party – Real Talk
The British band, known for mixing dance-y rhythms with spiky guitars, slows things down a bit. Oh, and there’s a joke about breasts at the end (on the LP).
  9. Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know
So this one is technically from 2011, but most of us heard it in 2012. Indie finally broke into pop radio! Even Glee covered it!
  10. Hunting Grounds – In Colour
Straight-ahead rock from Ballarat in the style of The Vines. Try not to bang your head.
  11. The Shins – The Rifle’s Spiral
This track opened the Shins’ latest LP and sends you straight down a hypnotic rabbit’s hole. OK, not sure what I meant by that, but the song is really good.
  12. Snow Patrol – Called Out In The Dark
Snow Patrol can occasionally get a little sappy, but this tune is pure fun; it’s got everything I like about them.
  13. Two Door Cinema Club – The World Is Watching
The Irish outfit, known better for dancy rock, produces epic longing — and it works!
  14. Feeder – Quiet
Just an all-around pretty song by the Welsh/Japanese veterans.
  15. Earlimart – A Goodbye
Heart breaking, but in a good way.
  16. Rhett Miller – Marina
The leader of the Old 97’s has written yet another catchy-but-simple acoustic number. How does he keep doing this?

*I sometimes do top 10 lists.

What’s Up?

I know, I know. It’s been too damn long since my last blog post.

What have I been doing? Well, journalism mainly. As you may have figured out, I’ve made it to Sydney and have been writing tech stories a plenty for Computerworld, CIO and Techworld. Check out this handy Evernote shared notebook for a selection of my best recent stuff.

On the creative side of things, I have been busy sending my new novel Divided We Fall to literary agents. This has been quite a bit of work but I am hoping for the best. I will also be entering the novel in this year’s Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards, which opens for entries in January. Whatever happens, I want to try to get this novel out to the public as soon as I can. I am open to self publishing, as I did with We, The Watched, but I’m giving the traditional route a “fair go,” as they say in Australia. If you’d like to help, please review my first novel on Amazon or other stores where it’s sold–this helps get it more notice, which in turn increases demand for the sequel!

Hmm… I guess sending my novel to agents is more marketing than creative. So, on the actually creative side of things, I’ve been working on a screenplay adaptation of We, The Watched, and would say I’m about a third of the way through. It’s a fun challenge converting the story to screen. The good news is the story adapts pretty well, perhaps due to its relatively short length and emphasis on action and dialog. And the three-act movie structure is really making me think hard about how to tell the story as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Oh yeah, and I updated the blog design. Cleaner and looks better on a smartphone. Suh-weet!

So yeah, that’s me.  Will try to have more updates soon. Been listening to a lot of really good music and reading a bunch of cool comics–so yeah, look out for some new posts, yo!

New Cover for We, The Watched

Just a quick update to say that I’ve just redone the cover for my dystopian novel: We, The Watched.

www.wethewatched.com
New cover! Click to see it big and in all its glory.

The idea behind the redesign was to make it a bit more obvious what my book is about. They say not to judge a book by its cover, but most people do. I think the new look says exactly what to expect in We, The Watched. Please tell me what you think in the comments below.

By the way, if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, the book is on sale for the entire month of July during the Smashwords summer/winter sale. You can pick up the entire tale about struggling to conform in a surveillance society for just USD $1.50! That’s half off the regular price.

Click here to enter the sale. Just use the coupon code SSW50 at checkout to get the discount.

Moving to Sydney

This will be my view.

So, yeah, my wife and I are moving to Sydney.

No, really. Like, the one in Australia.

Moving abroad is something we’ve been talking about doing for years.  We both had amazing, life-changing experiences studying abroad in college. We share the strong belief that you can’t really get to know a city unless you live there, and we are beyond excited to experience Sydney. We leave next month!

Whilst down under, I will continue to work as a technology reporter and simultaneously forward my creative endeavors, including a screenplay of WE, THE WATCHED and hopefully a few short stories. I’ll also continue to pitch my second novel, DIVIDED WE FALL, to the literary world. And of course I will keep the blog updated with news of my Australian exploits!

By the way, please check out my new Twitter account (@WatchAdam).  I plan to use it for some quick takes on the latest music, movies and videogames, as well as news on my projects.  If you’re only interested in news on my novels and other creative work, my Facebook page is probably the easiest way to stay up to date.

The End

On Monday I typed those two words that are the goal post for any author writing a novel: The End.

Yes, that’s right. I have finished my second novel, Divided We Fall. As I mentioned last month, there is still some polishing to do, but I think it’s in good shape. I’m shooting to enter the novel in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA) contest, which begins accepting submissions next week. After that, I will begin to circulate the novel around the publishing world. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you a release date at this point because it all depends on if it’s accepted by a publisher. I’m open to self-publishing (as I did for my previous novel, We, The Watched), but I’m going to hold off until I get more feedback from agents and publishers.

For now, here’s my current tagline for Divided We Fall:

A revolutionary and a government agent try to mend their fractured nation and reconcile a broken romance.

For more updates, please keep checking back here and also my official Facebook page.  Now, back to writing…
